Wiring
  • Connect L and N terminals of the power supply to the AC mains (Live and Neutral).
  • The DC output provides +5V and GND, which power the connected device.
  • A rechargeable VRLA battery is connected in parallel with the DC output, with its + terminal to +5V, and – terminal to GND.
  • This allows the battery to charge while mains power is available, and supply backup power during outages.
Block Diagram

Power Supply with Battery Backup – Functional Description

This block diagram represents the internal structure of a power supply unit with battery backup functionality:

  • EMI Filter & Rectifier: Filters out electromagnetic interference from the input and converts AC input into DC voltage.
  • Power Switching: Converts and regulates the voltage through high-speed switching to achieve the desired output voltage.
  • Rectifiers & Filter: Smooths and stabilizes the output voltage for the load.
  • PWM Control: Controls the switching operation to maintain constant output using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM).
  • O.L.P. (Over Load Protection): Protects the system by shutting down or limiting output when excessive load is detected.
  • O.V.P. (Over Voltage Protection): Prevents damage by cutting the output if voltage exceeds safe limits.
  • Detection Circuit: Monitors voltage and other parameters to trigger protective actions or status indicators.
  • Battery Charger & Backup Control: Manages battery charging and automatically switches to battery power when main power fails.
  • Alarm Circuit: Indicates system status such as:
    • AC OK: Input power is normal.
    • Bat. Low: Battery voltage is low.
  • Output Terminals:
    • +V / -V: Main output voltage to the load.
    • Bat. + / Bat.-: Battery connection terminals.

This system ensures uninterrupted power supply to the connected devices and provides protection and monitoring features for safe and reliable operation.

Side Notes
  • All parameters NOT specially mentioned are measured at 230VAC input, rated load and 25°C of ambient temperature.
  • Ripple & noise are measured at 20MHz of bandwidth by using a 12" twisted pair-wire
    terminated with a 0.1uf & 47uf parallel capacitor.
  • Tolerance : includes set up tolerance, line regulation and load regulation.
  • Length of set up time is measured at cold first start. Turning ON/OFF the power supply may lead to increase of the set up time.
  • The power supply is considered a component which will be installed into a final equipment.
The final equipment must be re-confirmed that it still meets EMC directives. For guidance on how to perform these EMC tests, please refer to "EMI testing of component power supplies.”
  • Installation clearances : 40mm on top, 20mm on the bottom, 5mm on the left and right side are recommended
when loaded permanently with full power. In case the adjacent device is a heat source, 15mm clearance is recommended.
  • The ambient temperature derating of 3.5C/1000m with fanless models and of 5C/1000m with fan
models for operating altitude higherthan 2000m(6500ft).
